Animated Adornment: Kinetic Jewelry

Prerequisites: A basic understanding of sawing, filing, riveting and soldering are requirements for this class.
Class Description:
Open, close, spin, flip: have you ever wanted to add kinetic movement to your jewelry? If so, this three-day project based workshop may be just what you need! Three projects, that explore various ways of incorporating movement, will open up a world of possibilities. The first project will be a pair of earrings that feature an accordion style mechanism allowing them to transform from one shape into another. The second will be a layered ring where the outer element can spin freely in any direction. Last but not least, the piece de resistance, the final project will be a small hand held flower that blossoms before your very eyes. Students should expect to leave class with completed samples or finished pieces representing each of these projects.

Instructor Bio:
Kirk Lang is a Seattle based Artist, Metalsmith and Educator. He holds a MFA from the University of Washington in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts and a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Jewelry & Metals. Kirk has taught regionally and nationally at the University of Washington, North Seattle College, Pratt Fine Arts Center, Danaca Design, Lillstreet Art Center and Penland. His work can be seen in such publications as MJSA Journal, 500 Metal Vessels, 500 Necklaces, 1000 Rings and Metalsmith Magazine. In 2012, he was awarded an Artist Trust Fellowship and Artist Trust GAP Grant.
